Gloria Scott Johnson Memorial Service
A graveside memorial service will be held for longtime Morristown resident Gloria Scott Johnson at 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 21,2021. The service will take place at the Scott/Johnson family plot in Morristown's Sunnyside Cemetery, located at the corner of Ann and Montgomery Streets. Parking is available.
Gloria's friends and colleagues are encouraged to attend. Please bring a lawn chair and, if rain threatens, an umbrella.
If you have favorite photo(s) of Gloria, please bring them and they will be posted on a display board. Light refreshments will be available.
At Gloria's request, the service will be informal. Her family urges those who wish to share a special memory of Gloria to do so.
Please plan to wear a mask and practice social distancing, subject to the health protocols in place at that time.
Gloria Scott Johnson, 96, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2020. She was born October 10, 1923 in Brockville, Ontario, Canada and was the daughter of American parents, Frank L. and Dorothy Scott of Morristown.
Her family owned the Brockville and Morristown Transportation Company, which operated a ferry between the two St. Lawrence River communities from 1916-1952. Growing up in Morristown, Gloria attended the local school and worked for the ferry company. In 1940 she graduated from The George School, a private Quaker boarding school in Newtown, Pennsylvania.
She was predeceased by an older sister, Carol Wagner, who died in 2010, and her husband Dick, who passed away in 1992. Gloria and Dick had three children, who survive: Richard W. “Rick” Johnson II, of Morristown; Daniel Barker Johnson, Poughkeepsie, New York; and Ellen Breen, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.
During World War II, Gloria worked in a number of jobs - including for the ferry company and as a research chemist for Union Carbide in Cleveland, Ohio. It was in Cleveland that she she met her husband-to-be, Richard W. “Dick” Johnson, a U.S. Navy officer. They were married in Mexico in December, 1945.
Her husband spent his entire career with Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA), a Scripps-Howard Company. The family moved many times, residing in White Plains, New York; Huntington, Long Island; Chagrin Falls, Ohio (a Cleveland suburb); Somers, New York; Berea, Ohio; and Lakewood, Ohio. While living in Berea in the 1970s, she completed requirements for her Bachelor of Arts degree at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Every summer, Gloria and family returned to their seasonal camp on the St. Lawrence River in Morristown. Upon Dick’s retirement, they returned to live full-time in the Village of Morristown, where Gloria served two terms as an elected trustee in the 1980s. She was instrumental in the Morristown Foundation’s restoration of the iconic stone windmill, built by Hugh McConnell in 1825. As chairperson of the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP), she was a key leader in the development of the Village of Morristown’s first sanitary sewer system. More recently, she led the petition drive that culminated in the extension of the Morristown sewer to include River Road East.
In 1990-91, Gloria and Dick built a year-round home on River Road East on a site that overlooks the majestic St. Lawrence River. She continued to reside in her home until just a few months ago. Gloria was long active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Swe-Kat-Si chapter and the St. Lawrence County Republican Party. She served on the United Helpers Board of Directors for a decade. In earlier years, she volunteered for the American Red Cross, USO, and as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. Her two sons reached Scouting’s highest rank: Eagle Scout.
Serving as Town of Morristown Historian in 2003-13, she enjoyed genealogy, reading, bridge, gardening, cooking, playing piano and raising dogs (Labrador Retrievers, in particular).
