William Bogardus Obituary

The Funeral for William F. “Bill” Bogardus , 69, 303 Gouverneur Street, will be Wednesday November 28 at the First Presbyterian Church of Ogdensburg at 11:00. Rev. Laurena Will, Pastor will be officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery in Morristown. A memorial service will be held later at the First Presbyterian Church in Southold.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 3-6 at IslandView Funeral Services, 300 Main Street, Morristown. Mr. Bogardus died Saturday November 24, 2018 at the Riverledge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg, where he had been a patient for the past few days while suffering with pancreatic cancer.

Surviving are his wife, Kim S. Palermo-Bogardus, three daughters; Nicole (Andrew) LaPlante, Peru, NY, Mandy Bogardus, Saranac Lake, Katie (Tim) Kyle, Wethersfield, Ct., one step-son, Dave (Jesse Heider-Ayling) Ayling, Toledo, OH, one step-daughter Becca Bley, Cheektowaga; four grandchildren, three brothers: James “Jim” (Penny) III, Morristown, Bob (Helga), Holly Springs, NC, John (Fran), Delmar, one sister Ann (David) Fenlong, DeKalb Jct. several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bill was born on April 17, 1949 in Ogdensburg the son of James Harry Jr. and Ruth Helen Witherhead Bogardus. He graduated from Morristown Central School in 1967 and SUNY Potsdam in 1971. Bill earned his Masters in Education from St. Lawrence University in 1997.

On April 29, 2000 Mr. Bogardus married Kim Palermo at the First Presbyterian Church of Ogdensburg,  with Rev. Thomas Patterson, officiating.

In the mid-1970s Mr. Bogardus started teaching at Ogdensburg Free Academy as a high school physics teacher. Then in the fall of 1998 he moved to Long Island and worked as Principal at the Greenport High School, before working at Miller Place Union Free School District as the Science Department Chairman.

Bill was a man of many interests. He became an Eagle Scout,  had been Morristown Town Justice and a member of the Mustangs Band in Morristown in the late 1960’s.

Later he became interested in flying, so much that he and others purchased a plane and obtained their Private Pilot’s License and Bill continued on to be a Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFII).

A past Chief of the Morristown Fire Department, he was also an EMT, he continued to serve the Fire and Rescue in the Greenport Fire Department and Rescue Squad where in the past he served as Assistant Chief and EMT. He was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Southold.

Bill was also interested in beekeeping, travel, music, Astrophotography and Astronomy. He was the current President of the Astronomical League and was former President of both the Custer Institute and the Astronomical Society of Long Island
